Was reading some articles on http://breakingmuscle.com/ and came across the author Patrick McCarty. An interesting fellow, an older CrossFitter like myself with a great attitude on aging and working out. (see article) In agreement, I think we stay young- as we grow stronger & faster. Obviously there is a point where its the law of diminishing returns, but till that point, I'm going to rage through the latter half of my 40's into 50's like a Lion, not a meek cubicle sheep. McCarty also brought up some interesting points in a series of articles on whats wrong with the Crossfit Open. I have to agree with him on one point- its too big. There should be 2 levels: Competitors and Participants. Its great to be a part of the local CF family, but do I really feel empowered when I'm ranked 3300th out of 11,000 after 14.1? No not really.(As Paul so aptly described it- a rank of 'crazy among crazies.' ) Do I have a chance of getting to the regional? No, not even close. Do I need to compare myself to Jason Khalipa? Sure its fun, to compare numbers, but to consider us 2 competitors vying for the same invite to regionals is asinine. Separate out the real professional competitors by vetting them with a minimum level of ability necessary to proceed then let them go through the hassle of judging, taping etc...and make sure no 'Cardio Jockeys' keep honest participants out of the regionals. Makes perfect sense to me. BTW- I love the term 'Cardio Jockeys'. Its so aptly describes my strong suit in the local box- folks who can blast through cardio-heavy repeats but cannot do muscle-ups and handstand pushups. Though I am making progress on both HSPU & MU's- it's the strength pieces that are my kryptonite. Unlike Superman- I can overcome my weaknesses with method, measure, test & practice. I love challenging the big strong guys to long runs because my cardio level is superb for long slow(increasingly faster these days) distance, but at the edge of lactate threshold snatching #135 they smoke me.Which of us is more fit - it totally depends on the context of what your training for and definitely another post. This kryptonite effect could easily be seen in my scaling of today's WOD. A real competitor would not blink at push jerks of #135. Me- I blinked and pulled the 10's off.
Yesterday was a nice quiet rest day that bled into a quiet workout today. Must be these frigid temps that are keeping everything moving slow.
EMOM x 7min
Even: 7 HSPU
Odd: 7 Toes-to-bar
-then-
3 Rounds for time:
10 Front rack lunge steps 135/95#
10 Push Jerks 135/95#
Got through 2 rounds of strict HSPU before I had to start kipping. Felt good. The front rack lunges, as usual were scary. I have nightmares of bobbling the bar right on to my femur crushing it. I RX'd the first round then dropped to #115 for the last 2. Afterwards I threw the 10's back on for a few more Push Jerks just to help alleviate that sting of weakness. Inevitably my upper body fails long before any other part of my body. I need to concentrate on spending more time developing strength in the arms & upper torso.
